Proxies are made at the office at all times, we never work with proxies made on set as they rarely match our workflow needs.

We work with the attach proxy function in Premiere Pro, and must always do so. Our project are quite large in terms of asset count and it would be an absolute nightmare to have to conform all these assets for online.

<aside> ‼️ Never directly import proxies without importing the rushes first and using the attach proxy function. Doing so will have major impact on the project during online. If you have any questions regarding the workflow, please contact Tom.

Making The Proxies With Davinci Resolve

  1. Proxies are made in Davinci Resolve, in the project settings it is important that we set the image scaling to “scale entire image to fit” for both input and output scaling before making the proxies.

  2. Raw footage will be imported in Davinci Resolve in the following bin: Source > Footage > Bin per shooting day (YYMMDD_DD0X)

  3. In the project settings within Davinci Resolve,

  4. Once imported, we will check whether all the clips have the same aspect ratio and the same framerate. If they do, we can make a single timeline containing all clips. If they don’t we need to make a timeline per aspect ratio / per framerate.

The timeline resolution depends on the aspect ratio of the source material. We always use the same aspect ratio, but not necessarily the same resolution. This means that if the source material has for example a resolution of 6048×4032 (3×2 aspect ratio) we will make proxies that are also 3×2 aspect ratio. For example, you can cut the resolution by half for the proxies, so the timeline resolution will be 3024×2016.

For example: The 4448x3096 footage gets divided in half
and the 3840x2160 (16x9 aspect ratio) gets downscaled to HD

For example: The 4448x3096 footage gets divided in half and the 3840x2160 (16x9 aspect ratio) gets downscaled to HD

  5. For deliver settings we use the setting individual clips. Below you will find the correct settings:

  6. Render the proxies to the project folder > 03_Assets > 01_Video > 01_Proxies Make sure to create a folder per shooting day and in case of multiple camera’s create a folder per camera type.

Importing Footage to Premiere Pro

Always import the camera rushes into Premiere Pro. Never import the proxies directly, doing so could have major impact on the online phase of the project.

  1. Import the camera rushes, make bins for every shooting day

  2. Select all clips and right click > Proxy > Attach Proxies

  3. When all proxies are attached, put some clips on the timeline and toggle the proxies on and off. There should be no change is the picture. If the sizing changes, something was wrong while creating the proxies.
