Whenever we receive footage from R3D camera’s we need to transcode the footage to ProRes masters first and then from the ProRes masters create proxies.

Then go to the Camera RAW tab in the menu on the left. In RAW profile, make sure to select RED. Then set the settings as below. (All settings must exactly match the screenshot)

Make sure to check all the boxes under ‘Use Camera Metadata’

Import Footage

Once the project settings are set it is time to import the footage. Create a timeline per shooting day (resolution doesn’t matter as we will export in source resolution).

Open the timeline and check that is has a Log (flat) look:

Not a log look

If it has a log look, go to the next step.

If it does not have a log look, go to the color page, select a clip and make sure the RAW settings are set to Project.

When you have set the RAW settings to Project for one clip, you can select all other clips in the timeline and then apply the grade from the clip where you changed the RAW settings.

Double check all timelines and make sure that everything has the Log look.

Exporting ProRes Master Files

We are now going to add render jobs for all the timelines.

<aside> ⚠️ It’s a good idea to render a few clips and import the ProRes files back into Davinci and check that everything is going well. A small difference in the scopes is acceptable, but overall it should look the same to the eye.
